It’s so much easier to live with yourself when you are yourself. Thank you for writing this.

Wow. This hits on something really profound - I'm not sure it's confined only to the liberal elites, although maybe it's more prevalent among them. It seems that at a certain point in the past century, it became very important to be doing "important" things with our lives, and to be "changing the world" (what if the world is already ok?) At a certain point, it stopped being ok to just live in the world and contribute to those around us - now, to have a meaningful life, we must be driven, ambitious, consumed by our very very important jobs, all day, every day.

What if that's a big part of the problem? That so many of us can only find meaning in being "important" and every piece of our lives must be a part of that mission? And the people who are so harsh on themselves in this way of course are going to extend that harshness to those around them.

To put it in Winnie-the-Pooh terms: Rabbit has become the dominant way of being (at least among the coastal elites). What we need are more Poohs and Piglets and Tiggers.
