Just saw a flyer for the Southhampton Writers Conference hosted by Stonybrook. Kind of bummed me out to see writers cooperating by teaching at a conference with a vaccine and booster requirement. “We are going to check cards.” Seems pathetic. Not only do Covid vaccines not stop transmission, in several studies the vaccinated have been more likely to get Covid. I thought the idea of being a writer was not to have your head up your ass.

I started wearing N95 masks in the 1970's, for respiratory protection, while working in the trades, from all manner of "dust" - lead paint sanding and "burning" dust, some asbestos removal dust, patch and drywall joint sanding dust, wood dust, mold cleanup etc. I also used elastomeric 1/2 and full face respirators for protection from all manner of solvents and chemicals.
I have the experience "of wearing a mask all day, every day for months on end or even years"
In hot work environments with extreme dust load I would work for hours without removing the mask. Then discard the damp filthy mask, wash my face, take a break and restart work with a new mask. If I used the mask for a hour or two and It still had some service life, I had a spot in a small cardboard "parts" box in my tool trailer where it and a couple other masks could "dry out" "decontaminate" for a while before reuse.
I NEVER, over 50 years time, had any ill effects or disease of any nature from mask use. I never meet anyone or even heard of any health related problems, from any person in the trades, caused by mask wearing. and yes no one I know wears masks for fun.
Could a person "culture up" a mask to the point of causing health problems if the mask was then used?
Should a person use sensible precautions, well described in the science and well demonstrated in practice, such as rotating use of a weeks worth of masks in and out of storage conditions that let the mask dry out and decontaminate before reuse or dry out and decontaminate in a 165 degree F. oven for 30 minutes if necessary? A new design, very breathable 3M N95 disposable mask now costs ~65 cents, a 3M Aura series N95 which fits most people, for a dollar and a half.

There are no exceptions even now!
