Naomi, I understand your caution and concern here. I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking that the horse has already left the barn (as some others have commented) regarding the security of the information held by the federal government. Also, I think the link to the Alex Jones/Mike Renz podcast referenced by David Blackwell is pretty illuminating. Time will tell. On a different note, regarding your comments that Elon Musk can't serve two masters at once -- I'm not so sure. I would think there could be a legal hierarchy here. For instance, as a health insurance broker licensed by the state of Minnesota, it is stated in statute that my first obligation is to my clients. That's the law. At the same time I also have legal obligations to the insurance companies that I write for, and of course there's my own self interest (which comes last!). I'm not sure how apropos my own example is, but I think it's relevant.
Naomi, I love you, so please forgive me this one sin. I don't like to cite someone else's work on your site. It's a rude thing to do. But this other essay is apropos and well written, and I think you'll appreciate it. It's about Elon's tech team at work. This deal is big. The Deep State is melting, melting, like Dorothy's witch. There's no stopping it now. Hang on to your hat.
Override: Inside the Revolution Rewiring American Power
Correct, Musk has a potential conflict of interest. We don't know what exactly his brief was and he and his team are harvesting and capturing data. Electronically no doubt because they ackowledged that they're using AI to interpret certian aspects. Has he been told to remove all that data from the networks he released it to, and will he obey?
That horse left the barn years -- if not decades-- ago.
China captured all of OPM's data years ago.; it's still out there likely being used to target certain US citizens and federal personnel.
The entire US population's healthcare data has been hacked into and downloaded the last several years (that we know about).
Most all of the federal employees who accessed and leaked data over the years have never been punished; heck, the Supreme Court refuses to punish the woman who leaked the likely abortion-ruling early. None of the people who have leaked, downloaded or shared our data were elected. But all of a sudden, Musk is the danger. You don't even know what NDAs or other agreements Musk and the other DOGE people are subject to.
I would have loved this much attention to the data leaks that have affected me personally.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant is far from a neophyte and has safeguards in place including putting the examiners on the Treasury Payroll with all of the constraints of other employees. What bothers me more would be if outside consultants were given free access with less scrutiny. This is a likely scenario.
I never worked for a major oil company as a geologist, but have heard many a horror story about prospect security. Couples, at least, used to be the most constrained. I know a couple, who both got jobs with the same company long ago, but if one left for greener pastures the other was automatically fired and escorted from the building.
I've had these same questions and appreciate you bringing them forward, Dr. Wolf. Trump's administration needs to let the American people know that they are following the letter of the law regarding ensuring that those tasked with reviewing government held data have proper clearances in place. Those who are putting people in positions that require security clearance need to be asked these questions and we need to hear their answers as a matter of public record.
The government has been overstepping for years, decades even. Classified data has been hidden from the people since WWII at least. Secret secrets known only to the privileged few about dark actions and $trillions in graft, the overthrow of governments around the world, and the coups against our own government. Yes. Our own government has been hijacked. More than once.
That info must be exposed. Daylight the Beast. No doubt many crooks will be outed. The rats are fleeing the sinking ship. It's a Hindenburger. And We the People rejoice!
The danger isn't thumb drives (AI already has your data). It's the Left going ballistic, full postal, yet again. Biden didn't blanket pardon everybody. We're going to need more prisons. Hey, maybe build them in Gaza! Let the crooks do the bomb disposal and haz mat cleanup there. The Gazans will appreciate the assistance. It's win win.
There’s credit score, there’s the data that is collected by Apple Watch, the data that is collected by Google, Meta, X etc., for the declared purpose of “optimizing the ad experience“
Every time you “log with X, Apple or Google” into a site, and choose to “optimize the ads”, digital experience you get is modified according to the goal of selling you stuff. If you notice that instagram is showing you too much of doomsday prophecies, it doesn’t mean the world is ending, it only means that Algorithm had noticed traces of paranoia in your behavior (and they are very easy to measure by Apple Watch)
If you want a pristine experience in any place, forbid sharing any of the data with the system, log in with a @proton.me email and write down your password in a notebook which you bury in a chest next to your house. Two inconveniences: 1) if you forget the password, you can be fucked entirely. 2) if you stir up too much trouble, the feds will come to your house, and they do know where to look for the chest, 3) for those who are brand names in themselves, whenever you go into the city, your face is checked by a facial recognition software a thousand times a day anyway,
The purpose of the Algorithm is to maximize freedom of choice and expression of everyone, while preventing such catastrophic events as the election of Democrats, civil wars, public assassinations, reboots of Russian Revolution etc.
If you’re not a fan of political assassinations, school shootings, civil wars, reboots of Russian Revolution etc., but would rather have peace and prosperity, you have to accept the fact that federal government should be incorporated into “the system”. Trump is not a big fan of assassinations (why?), he ran on delivering of peace and prosperity’s, so naturally he needs to ask Elon to integrate the government into the system so that it can be slowly dismantled. Which, as far as I remember, happens to be the goal of Communism defined by Marx and Lenin, but don’t tell Donny he’s actually fulfilling the Marx’s prophecy, who knows if that spooks him a little. But he’s too far gone into this to change the course merely because of the fact that he’s delivering a Communist paradise, not another of Capitalist mirages he’s so used to selling.
I agree. This is reckless and extremely extremely dangerous. I don't care which party is in power, I still care that we limit power abuse and increase transparency. In this thread it seems that many don't care about the abuse of power. This is the same as on the left where People justify abuses of power. This contradiction and lack of integrity is deeply disturbing to me.
Increasing transparency is exactly what Elon Musk has been ordered to do - he's trying to expose all the massive fraud in govt. This has to be done if we are to move forward. We've had lots of govt. accountability task forces/groups for decades, this is just one more. I'm pretty sure the folks doing this examining have security clearances, as does most anyone working in govt.
Everything, especially in politics, is a tradeoff. You are alleging that Musk would (or actually is) accessing/using personal (a.k.s., taxpayers) for political gain. But there is no evidence of that, unless you believe that uncovering corruption is an invasion of privacy.

I guess I prefer to hope Elon has our best interests at heart.

Thank you, Naomi. Especially in regard to our private information and the very real possibilities of harm.
Now I can explain to others more succinctly.
God Bless.
Naomi wolf Elon Musk concerns me yes especially around president Trump. But I trust president Trump's plan. Stay with the plan.
I wish your response was more measured using the word coup in a headline seems to border on hysteria.

Thank you …. I was wondering where you went?!?
Would also like your insights on immigration!!!
